Project overview

Together with principal contractor VolkerFitzpatrick and Kier (VFK), we supported the delivery of the £225m Luton DART, a state-of-the-art guided mass passenger transit system at London Luton Airport. Completed in October 2022, the system connects Luton Parkway Station to the airport terminal in under four minutes, transforming connectivity between central London and one of the UK’s fastest-growing airports.

The project was designed to reduce congestion on local roads, streamline passenger journeys, and deliver a more sustainable transport option for travellers, an essential part of Luton’s wider airport expansion and regional infrastructure strategy.

Our role

NG Bailey played a crucial role in the design, installation, and commissioning of the MEP services that underpin the entire DART system. Our scope included high-voltage and low-voltage power, general and architectural lighting, tunnel ventilation and cooling systems, communications infrastructure, SCADA data control systems, fire detection and suppression, and building management systems.

In addition to the MEP installation, we were also appointed to support commissioning and building works, which involved constructing two new stations, a tunnel section, and a viaduct and bridge over the airport approach road. The systems integrate over 22km of electrical cabling and 2.5km of fire hydrant pipework, a complex feat of engineering delivered safely and efficiently.

Our impact

This highly coordinated project demanded technical precision and close collaboration across multiple disciplines. By leveraging our engineering expertise and experience in large-scale transport infrastructure, we implemented advanced installation techniques that met the highest safety and quality standards.

The architectural lighting design along the gateway bridge became a defining visual feature of the project, symbolising the seamless connection between rail and air travel. Our ability to manage complex systems within tight deadlines played a key role in ensuring the DART opened on time and performed flawlessly from day one.

Collaboration

Collaboration was at the heart of this project. Working closely with VFK, bp pulse, and local partners, we engaged local apprentices and supply chain businesses to help deliver the works, building valuable skills within the region while contributing to local employment and economic growth.

Our multidisciplinary teams coordinated efficiently across every phase, from early design through to testing and commissioning, ensuring that every detail met the project’s demanding technical, safety, and sustainability goals.

Every challenge we faced on the Luton DART was an opportunity to innovate. By working closely as a team, we turned complex engineering problems into seamless solutions, delivering a world-class transit system on time and safely.

The outcomes

After three years of successful collaboration, the Luton DART now provides a fast, reliable, and sustainable link between the mainline railway and airport terminal. Passengers can now travel from central London to their departure gate in just 30 minutes, improving accessibility, reducing congestion, and supporting the UK’s transition towards greener, more connected transport infrastructure.

The project stands as a testament to what can be achieved when innovation, expertise, and teamwork come together, creating infrastructure that moves people and progress forward.
